Mobile Fashion Week Styling for C K Collection

Its always a pleasure to participate in fashion events, but its even sweeter when the boutiques and designers that you work with are remarkable.  Amongst all of the boutiques I styled this year, C K Collection and I got to work together for the second time.  The boutique paraded Valentino Red, Marc Jacobs, Missoni and über amazing Chloé boots around the runway for Fall 2012. C. K. Collection had a sensational selection of textures, metallics and accessories to pull from.

Featured here are 10 of the 12 looks from concept to implementation.  The snapshots are iPhone images after we determined the core looks we wanted to show, pulled our model profiles, coordinated the lineup based on looks and models, and put it in place.

Its no wonder that CK is regarded as one of the most preeminent boutiques on the Gulf Coast— hands down.  A special thanks to Beth and Susi for always being joys to work with.

A Few Key Items for Fall 2012

These are three of my favorite purchases from the trek overseas.  All three are functional and stylish, yet have a sense of easygoing-ness about them.

Dune Leopard Flat: Functional & Funky [55 British pounds]

This was probably one of my favorite items from Top Shop in London.  I use leopards and other prints as neutrals these days, and this flat pairs perfectly with skinny ankle length jeans or shorts with tights.  Extremely versatile.

Zara Military-Style Coat: A timeless wardrobe staple with contoured tailoring [Zara, 119 euros]

This military-inspired coat is offered in a deep navy and a dark gray tweed.  The fit is impeccable and the length is perfect.  It layers over a pencil skirt, allowing the hem of the skirt to peak from underneath.  The coat effortlessly dresses up denim, a sleek tee and heels for a “I didn’t try, but I feel delectable” look.

Peplum Skirt from Zara: Embrace the season’s trend that goes from work to the evening ballet [29.95 euros]

If you take advantage of one trend this season, make it this one: the peplum skirt or dress.  I picked this one up in Paris and you can find them everywhere, at all price points.   The trick:  get a material that is heavier than a jersey knit; the skirt shouldn’t be too thin.  The magic is in the silhouette of the slim skirt, and voluminous tiering from the waist.

When in Paris……

Here’s my top list of “Things to Remember” when you’re in Paris and abroad. And a few pictures just to browse.  The fashion in Paris, of course, was amazing.  Even the store front window displays were amazing.

  • I love my heels probably more than the average lady, but I promise you– you need to visit Top Shop (if you’re in London, go and see Michelle, she’s fabulous and a true British girl!) and get some amazing flats that you are in love with.  Do not attempt to prance around the city in heels.  Save them for the shows, appointments or meetings during the day, or events at night.  Again, do not do it.  You’ll thank me later.
  • When traveling via the Metro, check the operating times!  As a brief New Yorker, I assumed the Metro runs all night!  This is not the case in all international metropolitan cities 🙂
  • Keep a camera in your messenger bag and snap street style for inspiration.  Be camera ready and pleasant at all times; you truly never know when someone is snapping your picture!
  • For my coffee drinkers:  In Europe, especially Paris, remember there is a difference between coffee, and american coffee.  Coffee abroad is what Westerners consider espresso, so don’t look dumbfounded when it arrives at your table.  Ask for milk and sugar and keep it moving.
  • I can not describe the importance of punctuality, and being early.  3 minutes can cost you a few hundred dollars and missed flights and trains if you aren’t careful.  Punctual is late; early is on time.
  • If you’re a US citizen, you can get taxes back when you spend money abroad.  For instance, if you spend 30 euros in a french store, you’re entitled to a duty free purchase, so ask the store for the appropriate paperwork.  Get to the airport early enough to file the paperwork to get duty free status–this can be done after you go through customs.  Some people wait until they get to the counter (don’t be that person) to fill out forms for 10 different purchases.
  • When in Europe, utilize the Euro Star / fast train systems to travel to other European (and neighboring) countries.  Its the best, and most efficient way, to travel from one country to another.
  • When possible, find the markets to find unique buys.  They are the best places for accessories and small leather goods. (I bought the best attaché bag at the market in Paris).
  • Most importantly, if you fly an airline that partners with American Airlines for the domestic leg, bring a few extra dollars to contribute to the UNICEF fund!  They collect on the plane–give back!!!

I’ll also share some tips to keep in mind when traveling overseas, making purchases, and attending shows. A few things to keep you on your toes and save a little money.

Fall 2012 & Spring 2013 for Mobile Fashion Week [ September 3-8, 2012]

Image

Ladies and Gentlemen, the city of Mobile is being infused with fashion this week!!!  I could not have been more honored than to host the Art of Fashion, and now I get to work behind the scenes for Mobile Fashion Week!  As stylists, we know that its a lot of work but we get tickles as we stay up late nights to prepare our looks, complete layouts and make sure that everything is in order.  We are charmed that we have great designers and boutiques participating in this week’s events.  I’ve worked with CK Collection on their ensembles that will be showcased and they are nothing less than full of Fall 2012– textures, a mixture of neutral palettes and bright colored highlights.  It gives me goose bumps every time I walk off of Fairhope Avenue into the boutique.  There are some Rachel Roy and Missoni pieces that you’d die for.

The main runway shows will be Friday and Saturday, with all designers showcasing on Saturday night at Space 301.  A haute-inspired show will exhibit I Do Bridal and Formal.  Friday night’s show will be held at the historic Fort Conde Inn.  Thursday night is an advantageous opportunity to visit the Mobile Arts Council of Downtown Mobile and experience a boutique-style model presentation; reminiscent of the intimate style of Christian Dior in the 1940’s.  This year’s designer lines include:

William Bradley

Janie G. Couture

Kimberly Noland Designs

Ellena LeJeune

If you have seen our editorial photo shoots, you know you’re in for a treat.  Now if I can only convince Richard and John Ross to agree to couture antlers as model headpieces, we might be on to something……..

The Art of Fashion is a Success!

The Host of the Art of Fashion

[Photos are courtesy of E. F. Hunter of BrandMe Media]

Congratulations to Julie Causey and Darnell Jones of Ju Ju Beez Models and Talent for a well executed event!!!As the host, I was delighted to see everything go well!  VH1 star K. Michelle did a great performance, and the designers provided great Fall 2012 designs!

I wore a vintage royal purple jumpsuit from online boutique Trendi Confessions, and the Gina blouse from Sacred Hearts Collection.  The blouse pairs perfectly with a pencil skirt or pants (TI’s wife Tiny wore it below with black trousers).  It was the perfect look for the night!

The show featured the following designers:

Jamie Boggs of Trendi Confessions

Natasha Dancy of Diva Fab

Maria Allen of Made by Maria

Brandi Russel of Sacred Heart Collections

Jorita Johnson of Planet Jag

Zathan Marcs of Zathan Marcs

Pictures of the runway show will follow, but we are preparing for Mobile Fashion Week and London Fashion Week, so I can’t promise them within the next week!!

The Art of Fashion is TOMORROW!

I can’t believe it’s almost here!!! The prequel to Mobile Fashion Week, The Art of Fashion, takes place tomorrow at 7 pm, at the Center for the Living Arts, Space 301. Mobile will receive a treat as designers hailing from Atlanta, New Orleans and Ft. Wayne Indiana showcase. I am extremely excited about the theatrical, avant garde designs of Nathan Marks. Of course a full review will follow so check back! BrandMe Media and members of the Mobile Fashion Week board will be in attendance front row, so we will ensure that full coverage is provided.
